Topic: Modeling Pathogen Fate and Transport at Watershed Scale

Abstract 

Predicting in-stream pathogen levels has long been known to be a challenging problem due to complex interactions between microorganisms and the natural stream environment, and the spatial heterogeneity involved in stream networks of a watershed. In order to predict in-stream pathogen concentrations (with reasonable predictability), improvement in existing modelling approaches are required. One approach could be integrating the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based analysis with hydrological models to understand the impacts of watershed indexes considering the undisturbed land cover, which encompasses the natural land cover area, wetlands, and vegetated stream corridors, and the disturbed land cover extent which includes areas receiving manure from confined animal feeding operations, and areas under cropped and urban land cover on in-stream bacterial loads. The modeling can improve our existing understanding of pathogen transport at watershed scale, and help in deriving appropriate land management practices capable of controlling pathogen levels in environment.
