Marco Lab - Grand Prize Winner, Lab Safety Awards 2024!

A big congratulations to Dr. Maria Marco's lab for their Grand Prize win in the UC Safety Services 2024 Laboratory Safety Awards Program!  The Marco lab was the semi-finalist for the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and won the grand prize against five other semi-finalists; one each from the College of Letters & Science, the College of Biological Sciences, the College of Engineering, the School of Veterinary Medicine and the School of Medicine.

World Food Safety Day, June 7, 2024

Food Science and Technology's Cooperative Extension would like to wish you all a happy and safe World Food Safety Day today, June 7th. World Food Safety Day is an initiative that was started by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The motto for this year is "Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected". 

Spice Containers Are Probably the Dirtiest Items in Your Kitchen?

Just in time for the holidays – a food safety reminder for all home cooks. FST’s Linda J. Harris, in a VeryWellHealth article by Stephanie Brown, “Spice Containers Are Probably the Dirtiest Items in Your Kitchen” recommends making a habit of washing your hands, moving potentially-contaminated items directly to the dishwasher or sink, and cleaning and sanitizing the counters as you cook.

New grant for Dr. DiCaprio will help small-scale fruit & vegetable processors

FST's Dr. Erin DiCaprio, Assistant Cooperative Extension Specialist in Community Food Safety, has been awarded a National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) grant to assist small-scale fruit and vegetable processors to be in compliance with food safety regulations such as the Food Safety Modernization Act.  The grant will fund new low-to-no-cost online education and in-person workshops which will be offered in both English and Spanish by the team of collaborators, which also includes Cal-Poly Pomona, Purdue, and the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.
