As of May 15, 2013, almost all airports in the US have eliminated the use of the white I-94 card that used to be stapled in the passport of international visitors. Instead, airport passport inspectors are stamping the passport with the status and entering the I-94 information in an online database. SISS no longer requires a copy of the I-94 card for J-1 orientation purposes; just a copy of this entry stamp from the passport. 

The I-94 can be printed from an online database when needed for official purposes, such as employment verification. We are recommending that all international visitors check their online record as soon as they arrive, to make sure their status was entered properly. Please contact SISS if the record is incorrect. We also recommend that international visitors print their I-94 confirmation if needed for official purposes, such as a change of status petition, proof of employment eligibility, a social security application, the DMV, etc. 

The I-94 can be printed from the Customs and Border Protection (CPB) website: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html It is a simple process but since not all new employees have access to a printer, departments may need to be helpful in giving international scholars access to a computer with print capabilities if an I-94 is needed.
