Abstract

The California egg industry is undergoing major changes with regard to hen housing facilities since the passage of Proposition 2, which requires that enlarged spaces be provided to hens by January 2015. These changes are expected to increase the cost of eggs and will have implications regarding environmental impact and hen health and welfare. This seminar will provide an overview of alternative housing systems for hens and will report on three recent studies that were carried out to assess the air emissions and air quality impact from three types of hen houses: high-rise conventional cages, cage-free, and enriched colony houses.
